Crime Writers’ Association Issues Charter for Anthology Contracts
Writers organization establishes best-practice guidelines for anthology contract rights, payment schedules, and editor transparency.
The Crime Writers' Association (CWA), in partnership with the Mystery Writers of America (MWA), has published a Best Practices Charter for Multi-Author Anthologies.
The charter outlines clear standards for anthology editors, independent presses, and project organizers to protect contributing writers.
Core Charter Principles
- Clear Payment Terms: Anthologies should provide flat-fee honorariums or net-receipt profit splits paid within 30 days of publication.
- Defined Rights Exclusivity: Exclusivity windows for short stories included in anthologies should not exceed 6 to 12 months, after which full rights revert to the author.
- Transparent Sales Reporting: Editors must provide annual sales statements detailing physical print and ebook sales.
The guidelines aim to professionalize short fiction collection publishing across mystery, sci-fi, and fiction communities.
