Stacy Wells
A tribally enrolled Choctaw Nation citizen, children’s librarian, and Texas-based author of chapter books and picture books.
Stacy Wells is a tribally enrolled Choctaw Nation citizen, children’s librarian, and Texas-based author. She writes early chapter books, picture books, and nonfiction centered on community, family, self-discovery, humor, and Indigenous identity. Her early catalog includes the Tana Cooks series, and Stronger Than is her debut picture book with Nikki Grimes and illustrator E.B. Lewis.
The Tana Cooks books were published by Picture Window Books/Capstone, a family-owned independent children’s publisher. Wells has since published later books with Heartdrum/HarperCollins, so her indie standing here rests on her early, independent-press catalog rather than her whole bibliography.
The standard questions
We ask every featured author the same set, so the archive is comparable.
- How did you start writing?
- Years of reading aloud to kids at the library showed me exactly which stories were missing from the shelf, and I started writing to fill those gaps.
